Are Tooth Implants Painful

What Should I Do if My Dental Implants Start to Hurt?

If you’re experiencing sudden or unusual pain from your dental implants, it can be cause for alarm. Thankfully, most of the reasons behind dental implant pain are related to the normal healing process. On the other hand, sudden, severe, or worsening pain around your implants could be something else entirely.

At our Howell, NJ, office, we perform comprehensive dental services, from routine cleanings to dental implant surgery; we’ll help determine what’s causing your implant pain and the best way to help.

Is Pain from Dental Implants Normal?

For most patients, there’s typically some mild pain expected from dental implants, such as soreness immediately following the procedure. Usually, this will last between 7 to 10 days, and can be quickly overcome with over-the-counter medication, ice, and rest.

If the pain lasts longer than two weeks, gets worse, or appears suddenly after an extended absence, you should make an appointment with us.

Why Are Your Dental Implants Hurting?

Common reasons for dental implant pain from anethesia wearing off after surgery, ongoing soreness from the healing process, and general mild tenderness for about two weeks.

Pain that shows up later, becomes more noticeable, or feels sharp is different. It may be related to irritation in the gums, pressure from the bite, inflammation around the implant, or an issue affecting how the area is healing. Sometimes patients also notice swelling, sensitivity, or discomfort when chewing.

What to Do if Your Dental Implants Hurt

If your dental implant is hurting, try not to panic. Start by being gentle with the area. Avoid chewing on that side, keep up with careful oral hygiene, and pay attention to whether the discomfort is improving or becoming more intense.

Most importantly, do not ignore pain that lingers. Waiting too long can allow a small issue to become a larger one. Letting us take a look to see if something is going on with your implants or elsewhere in your mouth is the best way to find peace of mind and relief from pain.

When Should You See a Dentist for Dental Implant Pain?

You should schedule an appointment if the pain lasts more than a few days, feels like it is getting worse, or comes with swelling, redness, bleeding, or difficulty chewing. You should also consider a check-up if the implant feels loose or different from how it normally does.

In general, if something feels off, it is better to trust that instinct. A timely visit can often make things simpler and easier to address.
